Valentin Geiss joined us last October with an impressive portfolio featuring a range of beautifully shot landscapes. His photography evokes a sense of adventure, capturing the purity of remote locations across the world. Take a step into Geiss’ mind and find out what triggered his passion for photography, as well as his favourite locations and kit preferences, amongst other interesting insights.
miPic: How did you find miPic?
Valentin: Since photography is one of my biggest passions, a friend of mine suggested miPic to me. I really like the idea of a place where all kinds of artists can share their work and give other people the opportunity to put this art up at home.
m: Where are you from?
V: Currently I am based in the Black Forest in south of Germany. Soon I will move to Munich.
m: What equipment do you prefer to use?
V: I have experiences that gear is not the most important thing while taking photos – it is your sense for creativity. Anyway for capturing that creativity I am using a Canon 70D. My favorite lenses are the SIGMA f1.8 18 – 35mm and the Tokina f2.8 11-16 for capturing those wide beautiful landscapes.
m: How did you develop an interest in photography?
V: In 2012 I did a trip with a friend to NYC and wanted to capture my experiences with a better camera than just my phone. But at this time it was more like taking better snapshots. In 2014 I did a semester abroad in Taiwan and travelled a lot of Asia. During that time I got more serious about photography and began to think about composition, the right lighting and travelled to spots just for photos.
m: Which country/city has been your favourite to shoot in?
V: I have seen a lot of countries but so far I have to say it must be Iceland. The density of vast landscapes, massive waterfalls and spectacular nature is so high in this country and makes you feel like on another planet.
m: What is your favourite social platform?
V: I really like searching for talented photographers and new fantastic spots on Instagram. It is also great to connect with others and go on adventures together.
m: Who do you dream to collaborate with?
V: I mean there are a lot of great photographers around but I think I could learn the most from these three guys:
m: Is taking photos your full time job? If not, what do you do 9 till 5?
V: Photography is not my full time job. Currently I am doing my Master’s degree in Business and Engineering with focus on Product Innovations.
m: Who else do you admire on miPic?
V: Definitely 3to2 has to be in this list. I love his simple shots which inspire to travel the world. A second artist who has to be in this list is left field_corn. His digital artwork is simply amazing!
m: What music are you listening too right now?
V: Usually I always listen to music, it gives me a lot of inspiration for my work! I love to listen to EDM, it motivates me and just makes me happy. But also stuff like german rap, chilled guitar songs and charts I love to hear.
m: What are your top 3 favorite films?
V: I think Into the Wild has to be in this list. So if you have watched it already you better watch it. I simply love the story about the travels of Christopher McCandless. One of the best but also saddest movies I have ever seen is The Green Mile. Last but not least, I have to list the story of Stephen Hawking ‘Theory of Everything‘.
