Fresh from its win at Branson’s ‘Pitch to Rich’ competition, the founder of the mobile photography platform talks turning 100 likes into £100…
Company name: miPic
Founder: Carl Thomas (31)
Background: Print and photography
Based in: Battersea, London
Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?
miPic is a social platform for mobile artists and photographers to share their images and earn money selling high quality physical art to a global audience from a simple upload.
Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?
We have created a new market within a currently booming mobile industry, merging art and social media via a platform for one billion people to earn money from their mobile images and sell art to a global audience. We want to turn 100 likes into £100. Millions of us carry images that have the potential to be hung at a gallery, sold at a retailer or sent as a gift to a loved one. miPic enables that!
Are you funded?
Self-funded in development and since launch in January 2014, now looking for seed round investment. We won the Virgin Pioneers Pitch2Rich competition for Innovation on May 13 with a £5000 cash award and 12 week accelerator programme at the Accelerator Academy.
What were you doing before starting?
I ran my own art shop whilst studying architecture at university from 2007 to 2010 and then worked as a chartered architect in London following graduation. For two years I worked on the miPic platform in my spare time but in 2014 I took a sabbatical to focus on it.
What the best thing about where you’re based?
There are endless opportunities and knowledge based in London. You can do whatever you want here with an idea, talent and hard work. Being founded and located in London gives us instant access to the major investment discussions and media exposure which occurs here in the capital.
